In the absence of Harry Maguire, who suffered an injury in the 3-1 win over Burnley weeks ago, the Portuguese attacker was given the captaincy.

And caretaker manager Rangnick has suggested that Ronaldo and David De Gea, are the two best choices.

Ronaldo is currently in his second tenure at United, having previously played for the club from 2003 until 2009 before returning to Old Trafford last summer.

Meanwhile, De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

“Well [Ronaldo] is the most experienced player,” Rangnick noted before the 1-0 loss.

“The question was is it David or him, these are the players who have been playing for the longest period of time.

“And I wanted an outfield player as captain which is why I chose Cristiano.”

It was only on the second occasion in Ronaldo’s two periods at United that he was awarded the captaincy.
