Admiral Rachel Levine will lead the USPHS while continuing to serve as the US Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health, making her the country’s highest-ranking transgender official.

On behalf of the federal government, Levine, 63, will oversee a nearly 6,000-person force of public health specialists who respond to public health disasters, including providing COVID vaccines, and national catastrophes.

‘I am deeply honored and grateful to join the ranks of men and women across this great nation who have committed to defend the United States against small and large threats, known and unknown,’ Levine posted a video of herself being sworn in on Twitter.

‘I promise to uphold that trust to the fullest extent of my abilities.’
