Real Madrid staged a stunning late comeback to deny City a spot in the Champions League final for the second year in a row.

Guardiola’s ambitions of finally returning the valuable trophy to England were dashed at the Bernabeu, leaving him without a European trophy since 2011.

Meanwhile, his attitude is unlikely to have improved after watching adversary Mourinho reach the inaugural Conference League final.

The former Chelsea, United, and Tottenham manager was in tears as his Roma side defeated Leicester to set up a match against Feyenoord later this month.

Guardiola, on the other hand, did not perceive the Italian team’s achievement as a fairytale.

The City boss claimed: “I know that the people here are obsessed with the Champions League.

“The day we win it I’m sure they will say it was because we spent so much money, not for the work behind it.

“For me it is not a question of money and the fans do not understand it.

“Roma have also spent a lot of money but they are not in the Champions League.”

Despite the arrival of Tammy Abraham from Chelsea, Mourinho’s side is currently sixth in Serie A.

The remarks have the potential to reignite an old feud that has spanned multiple countries and decades.

Mourinho’s Inter Milan team knocked Guardiola’s Barcelona out of the Champions League in 2010, provoking an iconic celebration from ‘The Special One’ at the Nou Camp.

They’ve also had furious arguments while on opposite sides of two of the world’s most important matches, clashing during El Clasicos in Spain and the Manchester derby in England.
