N’Golo Kante, a Chelsea midfielder, confessed that he and his teammates were ‘unprepared’ for Roman Abramovich’s surprise departure announcement.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and allegations about his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Abramovich has put Chelsea up for sale.

The Russian has set the price at around £3 billion and has hired US bankers Raine Group to find a buyer by March 15, according to reports.

Following Abramovich’s declaration, Kante was the first Chelsea player to speak out.

The ace midfielder says that the team’s emphasis must remain on the pitch because it is the only thing they have control over.

The Frenchman told Sky Sports: “It’s something we were not prepared for, it came quickly.

“But the only thing we can do, because we don’t control these things, is to do the best that we have always done.

“Which means that playing football at the best [possible level], for us, for the club, for the fans and see how the things are going and it’s the only thing we can control.

“It’s sad to see things like this [the invasion of Ukraine]. We can hope that it finishes as quickly as possible and in the best way.”

Todd Boehly and Hansjorg Wyss, two American-Swiss billionaires, are expected to make Abramovich’s first official bid in the week.

Boehly and Wyss, who own a share in the Los Angeles Dodgers, are anticipated to make a bid of roughly £2 billion.

At least two other companies are considering a bid, and Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s wealthiest individuals with a net worth of £6 billion, could make a bid through his Ineos empire
