At an auction, a pair of Michael Jordan’s sneakers sold for a world record $1.47 million (£1.1 million).

Michael Jordan’s trainers

During his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984, Jordan wore a pair of red and white Nike Air Ships.

That was the year he and Nike started working together on his signature line of clothing and shoes.

The cost of game-worn footwear in any sport has never been higher.

Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. The shooting guard, who played for the Chicago Bulls for the majority of his career, became a global legend and helped enhance the NBA’s popularity around the world.

Jordan, who retired in 2003, also became the first billionaire player in NBA history. “This record-breaking result for the Jordan Nike Air Ships affirms the place of Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan franchise at the pinnacle of the sneaker market,”

Brahm Wachter, a Sotheby’s auctioneer, said after the auction in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Nick Fiorella, a well-known collector, purchased the signed sneakers.

They were expected to sell for between $1 million and $1.5 million before the auction.

They aren’t, however, the priciest trainers ever marketed. Kanye West, whose Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototypes sold for $1.8 million in a private sale in April, holds the record.

In recent years, the record price for trainers has been beaten multiple times, and the market is increasingly attracting interest from both common purchasers and top collectors.
