Virgil van Dijk appeared to criticise Louis van Gaal’s tactics, forcing the Dutchman to respond.

On Saturday, Van Dijk played the entire 90 minutes as the Netherlands defeated Denmark 4-2.

Christian Eriksen’s goal, with his first touch emotionally returning for the Danes, will be remembered for the rest of the game.

However, goals from Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay between Steven Bergwijn’s hat trick ensured a comfortable friendly win.

Van Dijk, on the other hand, appeared to be irritated by Van Gaal’s decision to play in a 3-4-2-1 system, with the colossus positioned between Matthijs de Ligt and Ake in defense.

And the Liverpool hero has made it obvious that he wants his international boss to set up his team differently than Jurgen Klopp did at Anfield.

Van Dijk told the Dutch newspaper NOS through footmercato:“Until today we have been training hard, with lots of tactics and meetings.

“There are good times but also things to improve. We will analyse this.

“Of course, we are playing in a new system, different things are required of the players. But I think we showed a lot of good things.

“Do I like the system? Well, I’m still in favour of 4-3-3 but I’m not the national coach and the national coach has a very strong opinion about it.”

And it’s evident that Van Gaal was taken aback by the remarks, as he later stated in his own post-match interview.

The ex-Manchester United manager used a tone that implied he was dissatisfied and put his captain captain back in his place

He responded: “I know he has that preference, he always said this publicly.

“We already had this debate when I came here.

“The manager decides the tactics.”
