During Argentina’s victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, superstar Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain spoke openly about one of his biggest regrets.

Argentina defeated France in an exciting penalty shootout to win the World Cup for the first time since 1986 thanks to Messi’s inspiration.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has said he won’t quit playing for his country, scored seven goals and contributed three assists during the World Cup.

Tensions erupted after the quarterfinal match, and Argentina’s 4-3 victory on penalties eliminated 10-men Netherlands from the World Cup.

During his post-game interview, Messi was ruthless in his criticism of Burnley loanee Weghorst, a Dutch international.

But Messi admitted that there was a lot of “tension” and “nerves” there during the victory over the Netherlands at the Lusail Stadium and that he now regrets his actions.

“I don’t like what I did, I don’t like what happened afterward,” he said.

“These are moments of a lot of tension, a lot of nerves. It is very quick and people react the way they react. Nothing was planned, it just happened.”

Speaking about his encounter with Weghorst, Messi added: “I reacted that way. There had been many things with this player, moments of tension like these… I was in the mixed zone, it had just happened.

“I don’t like to leave that image, but these things happen.”

“It was the worst match we played because of all the things involved in winning it or not,” he said.
