The US Embassy in Ghana has deemed Ghanaian-made Jollof to be the best in the world.

The announcement was made in a tweet to commemorate World Food Day, which was held on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

“On this #WorldFoodDay, we just want to emphasize that #GhanaJOLLOF is the best in the world! #WorldFoodDay2021,” the US Embassy in Ghana tweeted.

Jollof rice is a popular West African cuisine, particularly in Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Togo, Liberia, Niger, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.

However, Ghana and Nigeria have a long-standing rivalry over whose country creates the best Jollof.

The US Embassy in Ghana isn’t the first foreign mission to declare Ghana to be the finest Jollof producer.

Jon Benjamin, a former UK High Commissioner to Ghana, entered into the discussion over which country makes the best jollof rice two years ago.

The outspoken UK diplomat turned to Twitter to declare that Ghanaian Jollof is superior to Nigerian Jollof.

Jon Benjamin compared it to football, describing Ghana Jollof as the Champions League and Nigeria Jollof as League One.

“Why are #GhanavrsNaija #Ghanavsnigeria trending? It can’t be about jollof rice because GH #UCL-level Jollof versus plain League One Jollof just wouldn’t be fair,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, World Food Day is observed every year on October 16 to honor the date of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s creation in 1945.
