According to Dutch media reports, the suspect is a former Ajax player who joined the Russian Premier League squad in February for an estimated £7 million.

Quincy Promes was reportedly arrested in mid-December and later released in connection with the event, which occurred earlier this year during a family gathering in the picturesque village of Abcoude, just outside of Amsterdam.

After an altercation with a relative, he allegedly got into a struggle, and other family members quickly intervened, according to news accounts at the time.

Last November, the relative filed charges.

Prosecutors decided to prosecute Promes with attempted murder or aggravated assault following an investigation.

“The decision to sue Promes is the only right decision,” said the victim’s lawyer.

“After taking note of the file, we will also ask the Public Prosecution Service to prosecute the suspect for attempted murder.”

A court date has not yet been set.

The charges have always been refuted by Promes.
